Getting By When Backpacking

For most backpackers, getting along with the locals isn’t a problem. We are some of the more friendlier tourists after all! But with that said, if there is one thing that works wonders when it comes to fitting in, it is speaking the language. Even just a few words or phrases will lead to you almost being accepted as one of the locals which can open a few windows of opportunities - it can also get you a few beers in also!

Wherever you’re planning to visit on your travels, arm yourself with a small phrase book and practise a few of the more common phrases. You don’t need to be an expert in order to say hello, how are you, can I have etc. You don’t need to learn spanish in its entirety to learn how to say Hola! and so on. Even if you have no interest in learning a language long term, a few short words and phrases will help you no end.

Of course, some people may feel embarrassed about not being able to pronounce words and phrases correctly, but don’t let this stop you. The locals will soon correct you and will probably be more welcoming if you mess up on the odd word or pronunciation!

Travelling Around Cuba

For most tourists who visit Cuba. They choose a package holiday, flight, luxury hotel and seldom venture past the gate to the hotel beach. This is fine and I can appreciate that many tourists visit Cuba to simply spend their days relaxing around the hotel pool, drinking Rum or taking a stroll along the white sandy beaches. I have no issues with this, each to their own etc but I can’t help but feel they are missing out.

For most, Cuba is a destination that you visit once in a lifetime. It seems such a shame to waste the experience by just staying within your hotel or hotel beach. Cuba is a country that MUST be explored. Its diverse culture and many attractions make it one of the most sought after destinations in the world. If you go to Cuba, you must see Cuba, it’s that simple. A good way to explore Cuba is via one of the many Cuban tours offered. These are what make Cuban Holidays a little different to the usual beach / island holidays out there.

If you’re lucky enough to have a holiday to Cuba planned. Please please do some exploring, you won’t be disappointed.
